The Possibility Project: REFUGE

Composer/Music Director

May 10 - 13, 2023
The Riverside Theater, 91 Claremont Avenue, NY

Fleeing her country’s dangers and arriving in New York City, Emperiatiz is nervous and excited to call America her new home. She is ready to learn a new culture, find a way to belong, and build a future of opportunity for herself and the child she dreams of having one day. She soon learns that things are not what they seem. She witnesses the lives of her peers as they grapple with family conflict, parental abuse, bullying, gender discrimination, relationship abuse, and violence, and wonders if she has made a mistake. Will Emperiatriz find refuge in her new city or will she and her peers be exiled to an uncertain future?

The Possibility Project is proud to present REFUGE, an original musical drama written and performed by a diverse group of youth from across NYC. For the past seven months, participants have gathered every Saturday to discuss, debate, act, dance, and sing about the most serious issues they face in their lives. Read more about the show here.

About The Possibility Project

The Possibility Project utilizes the power of narrative and the performing arts to empower young people with the tools to transform their lives and their communities. Participants commit to meeting for six to seven hours weekly over the course of nine months to engage in a social/emotional learning experience that uses the performing arts to examine and address the personal and social forces that shape their lives and identities.
